🌱 1898 Mardi Gras Footage Found + Cantrell Calls Press Conference
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Hello and happy Thursday. I'm back in your inbox this morning with everything you need to know about what's happening in New Orleans. Let's do this...
First, today's weather:
Near-record heat. High: 98 Low: 82.
Here are the top three stories today in New Orleans:
- NOPD found a man dead at the scene while investigating reports of a shooting at the intersection of Bolivar Avenue and Clio Street on Wednesday night. Officers responded to the homicide scene around 5:15 p.m. and found a man lying on the shoulder of the road. NOPD has yet to release details on the identity or potential motive of the suspects or victim in the crime. (WDSU New Orleans)
- After years of searching, the oldest surviving footage of Mardi Gras and New Orleans have resurfaced. The 1898 two-minute film depicts the floats, costumes and century-long traditions of the Rex parade in incredible detail, including one that has been forgotten — a live "boeuf gras" or a fattened ox that was traditionally paraded around the city but has since changed to papier-mâché form in recent years. The footage will be shown at a special exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum that will run through December. (The New York Times)
- Mayor Cantrell addressed trending topics of concern including crime, flooding, and the use of the abandoned Naval base in Bywater in a press conference on Tuesday. Through fielding questions she claimed that crime continues to be a top priority for her and she wants to continue using a holistic approach to address the city's rising crime rate. She also reaffirmed her support to NOPD, offering more support and declining to blame them for the crime spike.
