🌱 Cantrell Living In City Owned Apartment + New Graduates For NOPD

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hi all. It's me, Shannon Denney, your host of the New Orleans Daily. Here are all the most important things to know about what's happening locally. Today's issue includes:

  • Mayor Cantrell's potentially controversial living situation
  • Shooting on I-10
  • NOPD Staffing Update

But first, today's weather:

Sunny and pleasant. High: 83 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:

  1. Mayor Cantrell has been living in a city-owned apartment rent free. The apartment, which presides over Jackson Square, has been used by Cantrell over the past few months and she has reportedly stayed the night frequently. The Metropolitan Crime Commission requested that City Council investigate the circumstances of this arrangement, but the city's communications director says her use of the space is completely legal. City Council is currently considering whether an investigation will be necessary.
  2. A deadly shooting took place on I-10 on Friday night. NOPD responded to a shots fired call around 8 pm by the Norman C. Francis Parkway overpass. Officers found a vehicle on the side of the road with gunshot damage and inside discovered a male victim who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at the scene. (WDSU New Orleans)
  3. 18 new officers have graduate from the New Orleans Police Department academy during a time of record low employment numbers and high crime across the city. This new class with help from hired civilians is a part of NOPD's revamping effort. The current recruiting class has 12 members. (WGNO New Orleans)

Today in New Orleans:

  • Tulane University Sailing vs Danmark Trophy Open Fleet Race (12:00 AM)
  • Free Family Sunday at Longue Vue House and Gardens (1:00 PM)
  • Rossini's The Barber of Seville with the New Orleans Opera Association (1:15 PM)

From my notebook:

  • New Orleans City Park will be hosting an "unforgettable" three-course dinner created by Chef Eric Cook. Join them in two weeks at the fundraiser of the fall, Magic in the Moonlight, for the Botanical Garden. (New Orleans City Park via Instagram)
  • Gal Holiday & The Honky Tonk Revue and Bipolaroid will be performing at the New Orleans Jazz Museum's Balcony Courtyard concert series on this Tuesday at 5:00 PM (New Orleans Jazz Museum via Instagram)
  • Starting this weekend the Besthoff Sculpture Garden at NOMA will return to its seasonal hours of 10 am–5 pm, seven days a week. (NOMA via Instagram)

Now you're in the loop and ready to start this Sunday off right! See you tomorrow morning for another update.
