🌱 Carjacked Dogs Reunited With Owners + Crime Update From NOPD

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hello again, everybody! It's Thursday in New Orleans and I'm back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening locally. Because community information is power!

First, today's weather:

Occasional morning rain. High: 89 Low: 77.

Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:

  1. Tragedy struck the vacation of two tourists driving from Texas last week when their car was carjacked with four of their dogs inside. The New Orleans tourists left their car running while parked outside a business on Louisa Street and returned to find that the car had been stolen. Thanks to social media and NOPD, the couple has been reunited with all four of their pets. (WDSU New Orleans)
  2. The New Orleans Police Department along with two city councilmembers have provided an update on where crime stands with police statistics across this month and the year to date. Though crime is still rampant throughout the metro area, it seems to be trending slightly downward with a total of 14 homicides this month compared to 23 in July 2021. NOPD has made a total of 264 arrests this year for armed robberies, homicide and non-fatal shootings. The police department has also implemented a new program to help with the shortage of officer manpower. (WDSU New Orleans)
  3. A former, 72-year-old, NOPD commander, Christopher Maurice, who was known for under-the-radar brutality in his role as an officer which eventually got him fired, was booked with a felony charge last week for pulling a gun on a bicyclist during an altercation about Maurice's driving.
