McClure will be in attendance with a variety of amazing authors. She will be signing copies of 'Losing a Hero to Alzheimer's The Story of Pearl" at the Bourbon Book Bash Author event on Saturday July 15th from 10-4 p.m. at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel.
It took author Patricia M. McClure 10 years after watching her mother succumb to Alzheimer’s disease before she finally felt ready to share her mother’s story. In her newly released book, “Losing a Hero to Alzheimer's The Story of Pearl.” McClure share’s her experience as her mother’s caregiver. “My mom was my role model and hero,” McClure says. “I watched my hero fall prey to the grueling stages of Alzheimer’s. This book will allow the reader to garner some practical standpoints from a family member’s perspective.” McClure acquaints readers with the warning signs, and characteristics associated with each stage of Alzheimer’s. She explains the effect the disease can have on the individual, the caregiver and relationships within the family system.
In Patricia’s story, you will hear how a mother’s love never fails. McClure’s love for her mom didn’t change despite the obstacles she encountered as a caregiver. From personal experience, she says family members must come together selflessly, patiently and lovingly to care for the needs of the individual, regardless of the family dynamic or any societal issues that may challenge their resolve. 'Your love one didn't ask for this disease,” McClure adds. 'It’s a transformation that you will never get use to but have to learn to adapt to".
“Life is very short and it's important for people to treasure every moment that they have with their mom, and not take them for granted”, McClure said. "Caregivers must be prepared to adapt to the unknown,” says the author.
