🌱 City Owes $36M To Victims + Four Deadly Shootings On Wednesday

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hey, New Orleans. I'm here in your inbox this morning to get you up to speed on everything you need to know about what's going on in town. Let's do it.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy with a thunderstorm. High: 84 Low: 77.

Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:

  1. City Council members announced that they will begin prioritizing making payments to victims who are owed money by the city. A Louisiana law that exempts the city from a judge's orders to pay has resulted in the city owing $36 million dollars among 500 cases spanning as far back as 1996. (FOX 8 Local First)
  2. Four unrelated shootings claimed four victims on Wednesday. The first victim was a man who was shot at 7:30 in the morning on Pritchard Place. Police have detained one person for questioning. The second shooting occurred on South Jason Street at 10:30 a.m. when police arrived and found the victim, a man, dead. Then around 1:45 p.m. in Comus Court a male who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds was found deceased. The fourth victim was a woman who was shot on Chef Menteur Highway. All four victims were declared dead at the scenes by police. (FOX 8 Local First)
  3. Second graders at a St. Tammany public elementary school were mistakenly shown a map of a 1964 school massacre in Germany during a social studies lesson on maps. On Monday, while watching a PowerPoint presentation, a map depicting the path a man took when he entered a school armed with a flamethrower and spear to claim 10 victims, popped up in a slide that was adopted from Louisiana's Department of Education. At least one classroom of students were exposed to the photo and the teachers were unaware of the it got into the lesson. (NOLA.com)
