🌱 DA Found Not Guilty + New Louisiana Legislature
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Hello, neighbors! I'm back with your fresh copy of the New Orleans Daily. Here are all the things you need to know about what's happening these days in town.
First, today's weather:
A little morning rain. High: 89 Low: 77.
Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:
- Starting August 1, new Louisiana legislation on marijuana will take effect. Among other acts passed, police can no longer use the smell of marijuana coming from a person's home as probable cause to search without a warrant and it will now be illegal to smoke or vape the substance inside a vehicle on a state highway or roadway. This new set of laws also includes protection for workers who use medical marijuana. (KLFY)
- A not guilty verdict has been reached in New Orleans DA Jason Williams' federal tax trial. Williams has been cleared of the tax fraud allegations and can now continue his work as DA but his co-defendant, Nicole Burdette, was found guilty on four counts of falsifying her taxes. (WWLTV.com)
- In addition to the new marijuana regulations, and after many failures on the part of the Juvenile Justice system, the Louisiana legislature is introducing more laws to help solve the recent string of jailbreaks and riots across youth centers. The OJJ must now have a plan for low, medium and high risk housing by January. Other acts increased parental involvement and constraints on recruiting and violent offenders in the justice system.
