🌱 FEMA Funds Extension + Cantrell's Security Detail Investigated

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hi there, New Orleans. I'm here in your inbox today to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town. In today's issue, we have these stories and more...

  • A man in the mayor's private security detail is being investigated
  • A tragic and suspicious death of a toddler
  • FEMA funds for Katrina need a longer extension

But first, today's weather:

Nice with plenty of sunshine. High: 79 Low: 60.

Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:

  1. The NOPD Public Integrity Bureau is currently investigating a member of Mayor LaToya Cantrell's private security detail who has spent a large portion of his time inside the controversial city-owned apartment that Cantrell has also been spending lots of time at. Officer Jeffery Vappie reportably spent over 112 hours inside the apartment over a 45 day period, including on two occasions where he was supposed to be elsewhere. Vappie has been reassigned while we await the investigations results. (FOX)
  2. Two parents have been arrested after their toddler was found dead with bruises and burns on their body. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death, but the two parents have been arrested on suspicion of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. The child was discovered just before 8 a.m. on Nov. 9 in Algiers and more charges could be brought as the investigation continues. (FOX8LIVE)
  3. New Orleans has already received a deadline extension to spend the $1.7 billion in Katrina FEMA funds, though it will likely need even more time. Currently, the deadline has been extended a year, meaning August 2024, but there has been another request submitted to extend the deadline until 2026 when the city's plan for spending and Mayor Cantrell's tenure ends.
