🌱 Funding Withheld from NOLA + Crime Spike In French Quarter
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Good morning, friends! It's me, Shannon Denney, your host of the Daily. Here are all the most important things to know about what's happening in town...
First, today's weather:
A stray afternoon t-storm. High: 90 Low: 78.
Here are the top three stories today in New Orleans:
- Mayor Cantrell expressed disappointment and anger at the Louisiana Bond Commission's decision to withhold funding from the City of New Orleans in response to NOLA's approach to abortion investigations. Cantrell cited reasoning that abortion remains legal statewide and the stresses of hurricane season that state funding could mitigate. (Press Release Desk)
- Crime is up by 45% in the French Quarter this year. The district is requesting more funding to help combat the recent spike. This comes just after a bar fight early Tuesday morning resulted in a victim suffering a graze from gunfire. Quarter residents and workers are fed up and scared. (FOX 8 Local First)
- A $43 million project was completed on Friday that brought more affordable housing to New Orleans East. The Reveal apartments are located in Michoud. The 150 units will provide space for families and are now accepting pre-applications. (WGNO New Orleans)
Today in New Orleans:
- Speed Rack Finals at the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce (3 p.m.)
- Bad Bad Hats at House of Blues New Orleans (7 p.m.)
- Sonesta Sundays at The Royal Sonesta New Orleans
From my notebook:
- Pontchartrain Park, New Orleans' first Black subdivision, finally received its historic marker this weekend after a two-year COVID delay. (U.S. News & World Report)
- Mayors in Abita Springs, Folsom and Pearl River will have challengers in their upcoming elections in November. (NOLA.com)
