🌱 Guaranteed Income Program Ends + Two Shot While Serving Eviction

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hello, New Orleans. I'm here in your inbox today to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town, including updates on...

  • Two were shot while serving an eviction notice
  • Special investigator arrested for payroll fraud
  • Conclusion of Guaranteed Income Program

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and pleasant. High: 85 Low: 66.

Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:

  1. Two were shot while trying to serve an eviction notice in New Orleans East on Wednesday. A deputy constable and property manager were attempting to serve the notice to the suspect when they were struck in the shoulder and chest by gunfire. It is unclear what exact events lead to gunfire being exchanged, but the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody. Both victims are said to be in stable condition. (WWLTV)
  2. A special investigator for the Orleans Levee district has been arrested for alleged payroll fraud and theft after supposedly claiming unworked hours for off-duty assignments he did not participate in. The former Baton Rouge police officer was arrested on Tuesday and was apparently under surveillance for a month that allegedly caught him in the act.
  3. New Orleans leaders announced the results of an experimental guaranteed income program that began in New Orleans 10 months ago for youth in need. $350 was provided to 125 participants every month who weren't in work or school. The program was intended to improve racial and gender equality and NOLA is the only city serving residents under 18. The program revealed the majority of the income was spent on necessities, with nearly 50 percent spent on food. (WGNO New Orleans)
