Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:
- On Wednesday, the Justice Department released its results from a yearlong investigation into the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, which is in charge of the state's jails and prisons, revealing that the state is "deliberately indifferent" about keeping inmates past their release date, and has known about the problem for a decade. Louisiana officials are now cooperating with the Justice Department to try and fix the system. (New York Times)
- Two people were shot in two separate shootings just a few minutes apart on Wednesday. The first shooting took place in the Lower Ninth on Marais Street around 4 p.m. The male victim was shot in the chest and died at the hospital.
