Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:
- A video has surfaced of a carjacking in New Orleans' West Bank where a woman fought back against her assailant. The video shows a woman backing up her car when a man crawled out from a bush and approaches the driver side window. The suspect pulled the woman from the car, producing a handgun in the process, and though the woman fought briefly the carjacking was successful and the man drove away. NOPD began investigating the incident, which happened around 9 a.m. on Tuesday. (FOX 8 Local First)
- Mayor Latoya Cantrell has presented a spending plan for 2023 that includes a $21 million cut to NOPD's budget. Cantrell appeared in front of City Council to present her budget, which includes a 5 percent raise for all city employees and more for first responders along with a bigger budget for the city's sanitation contracts. Cantrell maintains her commitment to rebuilding the NOPD's force, which will still receive around $155 million for the about 1,200 officer force but felt that the money could be better spent elsewhere considering how much NOPD has shrank. - In addition to this year's flu season off to an early and rocky start, respiratory illnesses are spreading rapidly among New Orleans children with no anticipation of a peaking soon. About half of the children getting treatment from the Children's Hospital New Orleans have a respiratory infection. Many are concerned about how these recent trends will continue in the coming months and traditional flu season, which is only expected to get worse. (WWLTV)
