Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:
- A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed around 2 a.m. on Canal Street last Thursday. The victim, Terrieck James, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound and was then taken to the hospital by a private vehicle that subsequently fled the scene, and James was later pronounced dead at the hospital. NOPD is investigating the death. (WDSU New Orleans)
- While many krewes will finally be able to return to their original routes this year for Mardi Gras, like Endymion, Cleopatra and Thoth, many smaller krewes are struggling to find enough security to operate on their usual routes this year. Many krewes, in addition to help from local law enforcement agencies, have reportedly also hired outside security to line their parade path. (FOX 8 Local First)
- The Krewe of Endymion has removed Mel Gibson from his role as co-grand marshal, citing 'significant feedback' and threats after their announcement of his involvement in the Mardi Gras parade. The decision to remove Gibson seems to stem from a history of the actor's antisemitic, racist and misogynist comments that the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans and the Jewish Community Relations Council referred to in a joint statement released earlier this week in response to Endymion's decision.
