🌱 NOPD Hiring Civilians + Young Man Shot Inside Home

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hey, everybody! I'm back with your new copy of the New Orleans Daily. Follow along for everything you need to know about what's happening these days in town, including updates on...

  • New Orleans crime
  • New developments in NOPD's tactics

But first, today's weather:

Sunny and not as hot. High: 84 Low: 67.

Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:

  1. NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson has announced that NOPD will now be hiring civilians to help officers with non-emergent police matters like traffic violations, collecting evidence and event monitoring at Mardi Gras. This comes as a part of NOPD's effort to retain and rebuild its current workforce by making officer's jobs less demanding while still keeping the public safe. (NPR)
  2. A 17 year old was shot and killed inside a home on Sunday afternoon. Police responded to a call just before 3 p.m. saying a man had been shot inside a home on Cohn Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the body and was pronounced dead once EMS arrived on the scene. (WWL)
  3. NOPD has arrested and charged the man who barricaded himself inside his home last week prompting a SWAT roll with the attempted murder of Joe Copper, who was shot in May inside his home. The man, Tyrin Wiltz, barricaded himself inside his home for two hours with his girlfriend and young children before SWAT was ultimately able to convince him to leave willingly. (WGNO New Orleans)
