🌱 NOPD Inaction Viral Tweet + Pontchartrain Exit Shooting

First, today's weather:

Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:

  1. The New Orleans mother who has been accused of causing the tragic death of her daughter and near-fatal stabbing of her son will be evaluated for her competency to stand trial. Her lawyers have made the request that she be undergo an evaluation by state and private doctors, whose findings will help determine on August 24 if the woman will stand trial. (WDSU New Orleans)
  2. NOPD Chief Sean Ferguson held a press conference on Thursday to address concerns and clarify the details of a 911 call and subsequent viral tweet that claimed a NOPD Officer witnessed an alleged rape on a street corner in the French Quarter and did not take action. The officer has since been suspended while the incident is being investigated. The witness claimed that the officer drove by and witnessed the crime and didn't stop to help. During Chief Ferguson's press conference, he said that the officer was actually on a private security detail during that time and that it was also unclear if the officer actually saw the crime occurring.   3. A woman was killed while driving near the Pontchartrain Expressway exit in a shooting where she suffered gunshot wounds while in the car on Tuesday. NOPD and Medical services arrived shortly after 12:20 p.m. and pronounced the woman dead at the scene. (Uptown Messenger)

  • HBO set a release date for the New Orleans-based 'Katrina Babies' documentary which chronicles the experience of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans Youth. It will be available to stream on August 24 8 p.m. CST. (NOLA Weekend)
  • Arts Market is back at City Park for its August installment this Saturday! You can come birdwatch along 55 Dreyfous Drive from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. (New Orleans City Park via Instagram)
  • The French Quarter Business Association's Dirty Linen Night has over 40 participating galleries and shops participating! Event wristbands are $20. (French Quarter Business Association via Facebook)
