🌱 Queen Sugar Day + Youth Center Inmates Move To Angola

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hey, neighbors! It's me, Shannon Denney, your host of the New Orleans Daily. Let's get this Thursday started off right, with a quick guide to the most important things happening around town.

First, today's weather:

A stray afternoon t-storm. High: 92 Low: 78.

Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:

  1. Mayor Cantrell had declared July 20 as 'Queen Sugar Day' in honor of the TV show in the city of New Orleans. The show, which has ended its six-year run, took place in New Orleans and celebrated many aspects of the city along with groundbreaking production and management practices. (FOX 8 Local First)
  2. Two people were left injured after a double shooting on St. Bernard Avenue Wednesday morning. NOPD arrived on scene just after the shooting took place around 9:30 a.m. at the North Robertson Street intersection. The two victims were males and at least one arrived to the hospital by car after sustaining gunshot wound injuries. (WWLTV.com)
  3. After multiple incidents at the Bridge City Youth Center, the Louisiana governor has decided to move some inmates to the Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola. Though many have called for the Youth Center to be closed, the governor has decided to have these juveniles moved while improvements are made on the Center's facilities. (WWLTV.com)

Today in New Orleans:

  • Discovery Day with the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism (9 a.m.)
  • Piano Hour with Linda Aubert at the New Orleans Jazz National Park (2 p.m.)
  • Ocean Boyfriend with Jess Joy and Miriam Elhajli Concert (7 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • Jolly in July will take place July 30th at the Morial Convention Center for fun family actives and a screening of the movie 'Frozen'. (NOLA.com)
  • Retreat to examine spiritual struggles with infertility (Clarion Herald)
  • Starting this week, the Great Lawn at the New Orleans City Park will be closed for seeding, sodding and uninterrupted regrowth. (New Orleans City Park via Instagram)
  • Join the New Orleans Jazz Museum this Saturday for the 10th Annual NOLA River Fest! Enjoy live music, presentations, walking tours, local food vendors and a full bar, and more. (New Orleans Jazz Museum via Instagram)

You're all caught up for today. See you all tomorrow morning for another update!
