Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:
- You can keep the spirit of Christmas alive by recycling your trees this year to help protect the Louisiana coast! In Orleans Parish, if you place your Christmas tree, free of any decorations or wires, instead of going to the landfill, the old trees will be taken for recycling and be used for costal restoration projects. Place your tree outside for regular pickup day if your waste is removed by Richard's Disposal, IV Waste or Waste Pro from January 9th-14th or on January 12th in the French Quarter or Downtown Development district. - A series of five separate shootings within seven hours across New Orleans on Wednesday night and Thursday morning have left 1 dead and 5 injured. The first two victims, one shot and the other killed, were injured in a shooting on Viola street around 8 PM. The second incident took place on Josephine street, where a man was reportedly taken to the hospital by EMS. The third shooting occurred around 4 AM on 4th street, where a teenage female was grazed by a bullet. Then, just 30 minutes later, a man was found with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital from Gentilly Boulevard. The final shooting was on I-10 East at Lousia Street where a man was shot and taken to the hospital via a private vehicle. (WWLTV.com)
- Water leaks have gotten so bad in the West End that residents now say that they have created a mini waterfall that floods the sidewalks, and believe that it is impacting water pressure in surrounding buildings. The Sewage and Water Board said it will try to assess the damages and plans on repairing them within the next 15 days. (FOX 8 Local First)
