Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:
- The Bureau of Government Research has recommended that the city of New Orleans and the Orleans Parish Sheriff find better ways to collaborate on the oversight of the Orleans Parish jail in a recent report. The jail, which has faced a myriad of chronic issues over the years, would seem to benefit from an organized agreement on how to better govern the jail, which has been under federal oversight or under investigation since 1970, according to the report. - In an effort to quell the rising numbers of overdoses seen across the state, Louisiana has decriminalized the use of fentanyl tests strips, which have now been removed from the list of illegal drug paraphernalia. Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroine, is often contributed to overdose deaths when mixed in with other drugs and has been a factor in the rise of overdoses across New Orleans.
- A man was shot and killed in Elysian Fields on Sunday afternoon. NOPD responded to the scene around noon and found the 37-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was later pronounced dead on the scene by EMTs. (WGNO New Orleans)
