π± School Zone Cameras Turned On + New Crime Scene Investigators
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Hello, friends! It's me, Shannon Denney, your host of the New Orleans Daily. Here are all the most important things to know about what's happening in town today...
First, today's weather:
Variable clouds, a t-storm. High: 87 Low: 76.
Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:
- In an effort to expedite processing time and reduce burnout, NOPD has hired five new crime scene investigators. Their training is expected to last three months and then they will be able to start helping NOPD solve crimes and hopefully combat the recent violent crime spike and drop in officers the city has been experiencing. (WDSU New Orleans)
- School Zone cameras will be turned on today at 7 a.m. for the new school year. The automatic cameras are an incentive to reduce speeding on New Orleans streets and will be in operation during school hours, which is 7-9 a.m. and 2:45-4:45 p.m. (Press Release Desk)
- A young man fell to his death from an abandoned power plant building on Friday. The 18-year-old's death is currently under investigation after he fell 50 feet from the Market Street Power Plant around 9 p.m. and was taken to the hospital where he later died. The man, Anthony Clawson, was a 2022 graduate of Ben Franklin High School and had plans to start at LSU in the fall. (FOX 8 Local First)
Today in New Orleans:
- DoTLO Live at the New Orleans Jazz National Park (2 p.m.)
- Louis Armstrong Riverboat Open House (5:30 p.m.)
- Robert Earl Keen at House of Blues New Orleans (7 p.m.)
From my notebook:
- It's New Orleans Museum Month, which means all NOMA members can receive free admission for two to any other participating museums in the New Orleans area throughout August! (NOMA via Instagram)
- The New Orleans Jazz Museum's Improvisations Gala will be returning December 3. Click the link in its Instagram bio to get your early bird tickets! (New Orleans Jazz Museum via Instagram)
- The New Orleans Health Department is hosting a mental health public awareness event at University of New Orleans, tomorrow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (New Orleans Health Department via Facebook)
That's it for today. I'll see you soon!
