🌱Street Renamed After Fats Domino + Inmates Unable To Appear In Court

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.

Hey, everybody! It's Saturday in New Orleans and I'm back in your inbox to get you caught up on all the most important things happening in our community, including news on:

  • Orleans Parish Jail inmates are having difficulty showing up for their court appearances
  • Louisiana's ACT scores are declining
  • Fats Domino is being honored with his own street

But first, today's weather:

Sunshine. High: 86 Low: 69.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in New Orleans who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our New Orleans Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:

  1. A Criminal Court Judge has ordered the Orleans sheriff to appear in court over the lack of inmates showing up for their hearings. Sheriff Susan Hutson has been able to increase the number of defendants almost by double in the past week despite working with a 'dangerously low' number of deputies available to transport and provide security for courthouse hearings and she estimates the jail is staffed at less than 50 percent. Inmates are still only able to be brought into court in small groups and the mandamus that stems from Judge Laurie White comes after only 1 out of the 11 inmates that were scheduled showed up to their hearing on Thursday. 2. Following the national trend, Louisiana's ACT Scores have decreased for the fifth consecutive year ranking Louisiana the fifth lowest average of composite scores out of the 50 states with an average of 18.1 out of 36. All high school students in Louisiana are required to take the test to graduate, which is correlated with low average scores compared to states that do not require the test. (Biz New Orleans)
  3. Formerly known as Caffin Avenue, the street where Fats Domino lived most of his life, is being renamed in his honor. A second line led by the Stooges Brass Band will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. down Antoine 'Fats' Domino Avenue and end in Oliver Bush Park where there will be musical tributes to the iconic New Orleans pianist and performer.
