🌱 Traffic Court Closed + Mayor Cancels International Travel Trip
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Hello all. It's me, Shannon Denney, your host of the New Orleans Daily — here to impart everything you need to know about what's happening locally. Without further ado...
First, today's weather:
A stray afternoon t-storm. High: 90 Low: 77.
Here are the top stories today in New Orleans:
- New Orleans' Municipal Traffic Court has been closed until further notice due to a public safety risk after water damage stemming from people living in the upper floors of the building began leaking near high voltage. Even before Hurricane Ida, when the Court had yet to move in to the space, people would often come to cut copper out of the building. SWAT was called to clear out the people living upstairs and the building is set to have some repairs made. (WDSU New Orleans)
- Mayor LaToya Cantrell has canceled her trip to Singapore previously scheduled for this weekend after backlash from the City Council on her recent travel plans. This would have been Cantrell's third trip within a month, traveling previously to France and Switzerland. The Singapore trip was for Cantrell to attend climate change meetings at a conference, but announced she decided to stay in New Orleans to oversee NOPD affairs. (WDSU New Orleans)
- A shooting on Thursday night left two people injured in Bayou St. John. Police are investigating after a man and woman were shot on Orleans Avenue around 7:30 and were taken via a private vehicle for treatment at a nearby hospital. (WDSU New Orleans)
Today in New Orleans:
- Plastic Free July at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (10 a.m.)
- The Rainbow Prince at the New Orleans Museum of Arts (11 a.m.)
- School Supply Giveaway at Eleanor McMain Secondary School (1:29 p.m.)
From my notebook:
- Applications are now open for the position of Executive Director at Global New Orleans! (Global New Orleans via Facebook)
- Dairy Queen will be celebrating Miracle Treat Day by donating a portion of its proceeds of sweet treats sold to benefit New Orleans Children's Hospital (WXXV News 25)
- White Linen Night and Joshua Starkman Events are coming these next few weeks in August to the Peacock Room! (New Orleans Magazine)
Alrighty, you're all good for today! I'll catch up with you bright and early tomorrow morning with a new update.
