First, today's weather:

Humid with periods of sun. High: 88 Low: 77.

Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today:

  1. Tragedy struck a family in Jefferson Parish on Friday morning when a house fire broke out, killing three young children who were home alone while their parents were at work. Firefighters arrived to a home on Lynnmeade Road around 9 a.m. to see the residence engulfed in flames with all three children stuck inside. The oldest child, 15, was later pronounced dead at the scene while the younger two, aged 3 and 7, were taken to a hospital but eventually passed away. (New Orleans Patch)
  2. A Louisiana judge has discarded permits for a Taiwanese company's plans to build a $9.4 billion plastics complex in between the stretch of the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge referred to as 'Cancer Alley' where many industrial and polluting buildings are located. Environmentalists are rejoicing after the judge denied the permits preserving the right of Louisiana residents have to clean, unpolluted air. (Biz New Orleans)
  3. After much political turmoil coming from the Louisiana Bond Commission's previous policy of withholding flood money from New Orleans in order to pressure city leaders into a stricter stance on the abortion ban, a vote has finally approved the $39 million in funding for the Sewerage and Water Board.
