Tulane students bid adieu to Bruff Commons with jazz funeral

Tulane University Dining by Sodexo commemorated the closing of Bruff Commons Dining Room last semester with a New Orleans-style jazz funeral procession.

Over 100 students joined the march, holding handkerchiefs as a brass band led the way to Bruff, the nearly sixty-year-old dining hall which is being replaced with a new building this fall.

The funeral procession was followed by a New Orleans-themed bash attended by approximately 1,600 students.

Tulane University Dining Services served meat pies, fried green tomato po-boys, muffulettas, non-alcoholic hurricanes punch, root beer, and crawfish bread.

Replacing Bruff is the Commons, Tulane University’s new three-story, 77,000 square-foot facility.

The Commons is a new milestone for student life,” said Michael Fulkerson, marketing and communications director for Tulane Dining. “The dazzling structure improves the campus dining experience while accommodating Tulane’s growth as an institution.”

The Dining Room at the Commons will more than double the seating space of the former dining hall, allowing nearly 1,100 people to dine across two floors and four main dining areas.

“With the move to the Commons, Tulane University Dining Services is able to offer reimagined cuisine, a rotating menu of local and international options, and the state-of-the-art Chef’s Table demonstration kitchen,” said Fulkerson.

When dinner service ends, the dining room will stay open to provide late night student engagement and study space until 2am.

The Commons is also the new home of Newcomb Institute, which educates undergraduates for women’s leadership in the 21st century.
