SHREVEPORT, LA β€” An alligator was minding its own business Monday when it ran afoul of Caddo Parish police, who were also minding their own business β€” in this case, answering a call about the 8-foot reptile in the middle of Louisiana Highway 1.

Deputies from the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office tried to contain the alligator, but it opened its jaws for the win, taking a bite out of the grill of the patrol cruiser.

The gator is β€œthe one that got away,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post. It went on its way before wildlife removal experts could arrive to relocate it.

The widely shared Facebook post unleashed a trove of hilarious comments, including several that said the alligator should have been charged with β€œbite and run” and another that said the encounter was β€œnot how one perceives crime taking a bite out of the law.”

Others were eager to see the accident and insurance reports. One quoted the sing-songy line from the Farmers Insurance commercial, β€œWe know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two.”

β€œThe insurance agent said, β€˜What ate your car?’,” Lynn Richardson wrote.

β€œY’all need to get them and train them so we’d have K-9 K-Alligator units all around,” Michelle Boynton noted, saying she doesn’t know β€œabout y’all, but I can visualize the individual being chased by an alligator.”

Jan Deemer, noting that β€œthey are at my Momma’s all the time,” said encountering alligators is β€œthe price you pay when you live on the Bayou.”

Deemer had her own encounter with an alligator as a high school student.

β€œI decided to go down to the land that was being bulldozed,” Deemer wrote. β€œI knew that alligators had been seen there. Well I got my younger brother to go with me, we saw some swimming around and that’s when I got the idea to throw some dried pieces of dirt at them.

β€œI never thought that I would hit one and I hit one! The alligator came out of the water running. I jumped into my car and [for some] reason I locked my door leaving my brother on his own. I learned a lesson” Don’t mess with them. We look back and laugh.”

Charlotte Siller Anderson wondered this:

β€œWhat was God thinking about when He told Noah to put them on the Ark?”
