Shreve Memorial Library is honoring military personnel, both past and present, with a series of events in celebration of Veterans Day. Veterans Day is recognized annually on November 11 to honor veterans of all military branches who have served in war and in peace. Special Veterans Day programs, including the annual Freedom Tree lighting at the North Shreveport Branch, will take place Tuesday, November 9 through Thursday, November 11 at several Shreve Memorial Library branches. All programs are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, November 9, teens are invited to express their thanks through letters to veterans at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch. Teens, ages 11 to 17, will write a letter of thanks or note of appreciation to a member of the armed forces. The event will take place at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, located at 2105 Hollywood Avenue, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, November 10, children and their caretakers are invited to join the Broadmoor Branch for a Veterans Day Preschool Story Time. Children will hear stories about and complete activities honoring veterans and their service to the country. Designed for preschool-aged children and their families, Preschool Story Time includes stories, songs, crafts and interactive game play to promote literacy. The story time will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Broadmoor Branch, located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive.

The North Shreveport Branch will hold their annual Freedom Tree lighting ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11. The Freedom Tree honors military personnel in all branches of the military and includes pictures of both living and deceased members of the armed forces. Northwood High School JROTC Color Guard will present the colors to begin the celebration. The life of Whayland Greene, who served in World War II and received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, and other honors for his service, will be celebrated as well with a replay of an interview he did for the library in 2020 detailing his years of service. Greene passed away in January at the age of 95. The Freedom Tree will be on display throughout the month of November at the North Shreveport Branch, located at 4844 N. Market Street.
All veterans programs at Shreve Memorial Library are free and open to the public. Registration, face masks and social distancing are required for all programs.
