Public hearings will be advertised before finalizing new penalties, which could mirror other parishes’ escalating fines and rely on constables and justices of the peace for enforcement.

(natchezdemocrat.com) — Counselors and psychiatrists were on standby Monday at Vidalia High School and other local campuses to support students after a crash killed 19-year-old Vidalia senior Jacob Bonnette and 17-year-old Natchez student Michelle Baity. School leaders say Bonnette was just days from graduating and had earned a carpentry certificate, while two others in the vehicle survived with less serious injuries.
• Online child predator arrested in Mississippi, extradited to Concordia Parish (myarklamiss.com) — Law enforcement in Vidalia and Concordia Parish report that a 63-year-old man was arrested in Mississippi and extradited here after allegedly engaging in explicit online conversations with someone he believed was a 16-year-old. Cyber Crime Unit investigators say he now faces multiple charges related to computer-aided solicitation of a minor and indecent behavior, and is being held on a substantial bond.
