📰 News we're reading

• Sen. Collins announces contract award to Bath Iron Works for the Navy's newest DDG-51 destroyer (mdislander.com) — Bath Iron Works has secured a new U.S. Navy contract to build the DDG‑149 destroyer, named for Medal of Honor recipient Robert R. Ingram, reinforcing the shipyard’s long-term workload in Bath. Senator Susan Collins says the award highlights BIW’s skilled workforce, supports good-paying local jobs, and strengthens both Maine’s economy and national security.

• Shipwrights in the making: A community college teams up with Bath Iron Works to train workers (mainebiz.biz) — New training partnerships with Maine’s community colleges are feeding a steady pipeline of workers to Bath Iron Works, with free three‑week courses and weekly stipends leading directly to shipyard job interviews. The program’s expansion to Central Maine Community College in Auburn, just 32 miles from Bath, is already placing graduates on Navy destroyer projects and could strengthen the regional workforce that powers Bath’s economy.

• What Susan Collins did and didn't ask Pete Hegseth (pressherald.com) — Funding for new Navy destroyers built at Bath Iron Works is in question after Sen. Susan Collins pressed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about why President Trump’s latest budget orders only one DDG-51 ship. Collins focused on how uncertain demand could affect BIW’s workforce and stability, even as other senators zeroed in on broader foreign policy and military issues.
