2. Cat dies in fire that significantly damaged Kittery home (newscentermaine.com) — A Kittery family escaped a serious overnight house fire on Tenney Hill Road after smoke alarms and a neighbor’s warning, but their cat died and the home was heavily damaged. State fire investigators say the blaze began outside near a grill, though the exact cause couldn’t be determined because of the home’s instability. No injuries to the three residents were reported.

3. DARPA Awards Guidehouse $25M Operations Support Contract (clearancejobs.com) — A massive Navy contract will fund more than $650 million in power and water resiliency upgrades at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, with work running through 2031. The project aims to boost the yard’s reliability and could mean years of construction activity and related jobs for the region. Other large defense contracts nationwide were also announced alongside this award.

Navy has lost 15,000 operational days because of idle submarines, GAO reports (stripes.com) — Kittery’s Portsmouth Naval Shipyard gets a key mention in a new federal report showing the Navy has lost 15,000 operational days to submarine maintenance delays. The GAO warns that growing idle time and slow decommissioning could cost billions more unless the Navy changes course. Portsmouth is one of four main shipyards handling nuclear attack submarine overhauls.
