Basking shark sighting off Pepperrell Cove in Kittery: What to know (fosters.com) — A large, harmless basking shark was spotted off Pepperrell Cove in Kittery on May 30, coming within about 150 yards of shore and drawing attention from the town harbormaster. Officials are urging boaters and swimmers to keep their distance, watch carefully ahead on the water, and simply let these increasingly frequent marine visitors pass through safely.

Navy Confirms Wreck Site of WWII Submarine USS Herring (military.com) — Kittery gets a poignant mention as the birthplace of the WWII submarine USS Herring, which the Navy has now conclusively located on the seafloor off Japan after 82 years. The sub, launched from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery in 1942, was lost with 83 sailors aboard; officials say the newly confirmed wreck will be protected as a war grave and offers long-sought closure to families and historians.
