📰 News we're reading

1. Portland tells Maine Public it's not tax-exempt — again (pressherald.com) — Portland's assessor has again denied Maine Public's request for tax-exempt status on its new downtown headquarters in the former Portland Public Market building, leaving the nonprofit with a roughly $197,000 annual tax bill. The decision comes amid broader scrutiny of how the city taxes nonprofits, with groups like the Maine Irish Heritage Center and Mayo Street Arts also losing exemptions and scrambling to cover new costs.

2. Vigil held to remember Portland stabbing victim Juju Nadeau (wmtw.com) — Portland residents gathered at Congress Square Park Friday night to honor 21-year-old Juju Nadeau, who was fatally stabbed near Tukey's Bridge earlier this month. Friends remembered her as a joyful, accepting presence and pledged to carry on her dreams, while court documents describe how an encounter with a man on a bicycle allegedly escalated into the deadly attack.

3. Cat missing for more than a month back home in South Portland (fox23maine.com) — South Portland neighbors may be relieved to hear that Theo, a cat missing for more than a month, is safely back home after animal control officers trapped him in the area he'd been frequenting. Police say he slipped out through a damaged window screen while his owner was in Jamaica on a hurricane relief trip, and now needs to regain a healthy weight.

4. Rescues shine in "Acro-Cats" show (newscentermaine.com) — A touring troupe of rescue cats, The Amazing Acro-Cats, is in Portland for a three-week, sold-out residency at The Hill Arts theater, highlighting how trainable and adoptable cats can be. Led by trainer Samantha Martin, the show partners locally with Friends of Feral Felines to promote cat rescue and fostering while entertaining audiences with feline tricks.

5. 'We love telling the stories': CBS13 & FOX23 given Wish Maker Award from Make-A-Wish Maine (wgme.com) — In Portland, TV stations CBS13 and FOX23 were honored with Make-A-Wish Maine's Wish Maker Award after telethons helped raise nearly $700,000 to grant wishes for critically ill children statewide. The recognition highlights how local viewers, volunteers, and station staff are powering dozens of life-changing experiences for Maine families, with each wish costing about $8,500 but free to families.
