1. Saco approves $44 million municipal budget (pressherald.com) — Saco’s City Council has unanimously approved a $44 million municipal budget for 2027, with details on tax impacts expected soon. Councilors also set aside $300,000 for future affordable housing and $200,000 for biking and walking projects, while residents will vote on the separate school budget, which could still mean a tax increase, on June 9.

Meet the southern Maine veterinarian who treats everything from house cats to tigers (pressherald.com) — A Saco-based veterinarian is building a mobile practice that brings care directly to pets and even exotic animals across southern Maine, from Buxton to Kennebunk. She treats everything from anxious rescue dogs to rabbits, pigs and iguanas at home, and occasionally offers free clinics to help neighbors who struggle with vet bills, all in memory of her beloved dog Yin-Yang.

3. Demolition underway at the old Saco Drive-In (pressherald.com) — Demolition of the former Saco Drive-In on Route 1 is now underway, ending the long run of what was once Maine’s oldest drive-in theater. Crews began tearing down the 1939-era landmark about two weeks ago, leaving behind only remnants like the old snack bar, projector room, and faded signage that many Saco residents will remember.

Maine election officials consider transgender signature challenge (spectrumlocalnews.com) — A Saco resident who works for Planned Parenthood testified in Augusta that she saw petitioners for a transgender sports and bathroom ballot initiative leave signature sheets unattended at polling places. State election officials now have two weeks to decide whether enough valid signatures remain for the controversial November 2026 question to proceed, a ruling that could affect school policies statewide.
