Old Saco church poised to become affordable housing (pressherald.com) — A former Saco United Methodist Church on School Street is slated to become seven affordable apartments, with groundbreaking expected next spring and construction lasting about a year. Nonprofit Project Home will buy the city-owned building for $1, using grants and historic tax credits, while reserving units for foster youth and new city staff in downtown Saco.

Maine Phys Ed Teacher Shatters Three-Pointer Guinness Record with 11,115 Baskets In 24 Hours (themainewire.com) — A Saco Middle School phys ed teacher just sank 11,115 three-pointers in 24 hours in the school gym, surpassing the previous Guinness World Record by 412 shots. Ryan “Dr. Buckets” Martin says the grueling attempt highlighted perseverance and healthy habits for his cheering students, though Guinness officials still need to verify the new mark.

Thornton Academy Middle School celebrates 20 years (sacobaynews.com) — Thornton Academy Middle School, which serves many Saco-area students, just marked its 20th anniversary with games, music, and ice cream on campus. Staff reflected on fighting to keep Arundel students, the school’s tight-knit community feel, and the retirement of founding teacher Liz Cooney after this school year.

Unitil wants rate increase for southern Maine natural gas customers (wmtw.com) — Natural gas customers in Saco could see their Unitil delivery bills rise by about $11 a month if a proposed rate increase wins state approval. The Maine Public Utilities Commission will review the request, which targets 2027 implementation and also affects several neighboring southern Maine communities.
