• Westbrook Apartment Fire Ruled Accidental After Smoking Materials Ignite Trash Can (themainewire.com) — An early-morning fire on June 30 heavily damaged a two-story apartment building at 23 Locust Street in Westbrook and has been ruled accidental, caused by improperly discarded smoking materials in an outdoor trash can. All residents escaped safely, but one of four cats died, and the building is now considered uninhabitable after a large multi-department response.
   

• MaineDOT to Work on Forest Avenue in Portland (einpresswire.com) — MaineDOT will start a highway preservation paving project July 15 on Forest Avenue in Portland, but the work will be carried out by Coastal Road Repair, a contractor based in Westbrook. Expect lane shifts, alternating one-way traffic at night, and delays through late August as crews mill and repave the roadway and add pedestrian safety upgrades.
   

• Portland Awarded $2.12 M For Brighton Avenue Safety Improvemenets (munjoyhillnews.net) — Brighton Avenue, a key route connecting Westbrook commuters to downtown Portland and medical centers, is set for major safety upgrades thanks to a $2.12 million federal grant. Portland will test data-driven changes along a one-mile stretch between City Hospital Drive and Wayside Pool, with construction expected by summer 2027 to reduce speeding and improve pedestrian crossings.
