Aberdeen Senior Wins State Wrestling Championship

Shay Velez, who won the state wrestling championship for the MPSSAA 3A 112-lb weight class Saturday night, had to be talked into joining the wrestling team, according to Athletic Director Tim Lindecamp.

Shay Velez won the state wrestling championship for the MPSSAA 3A 112-pound weight class Saturday night at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House.

Aberdeen High School Athletic Director Tim Lindecamp said he was extremely proud because he had to convince Velez, a senior, to join the team.

 “Shay was in my class as a freshman,” said Lindecamp. “I said, 'Just come out to one practice.'"

 Now his other family members have taken an interest in wrestling.

 “It’s kind of become the family sport,” Lindecamp said. “Shay’s done so good it’s contagious.”
