MOMS TALK Q & A: Circumcision

Familydoctor.org ran an interesting article that dealt with the age-old topic of circumcision.  The article can be found here. According to the website, there are various benefits and drawbacks to the truly elective procedure.

This week, Aberdeen Patch posed the Facebook question:

Is circumcision still necessary?

Jacinda Gibbons, of Aberdeen, said: The recommendation on WebMD.com is to speak to your pediatrician about the benefits and the risks.  Some risks include pain, bleeding, infection and possible injury.

The benefits include decreased risk of urinary track infections, decreased risk of STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) in men, protection against penile cancer and more.  

Esthetically, some may feel that circumcision of the penis looks better and is much easier to keep clean. Culture, religion and personal preferences come into play as well. As a mother or father, you will make decisions based on your child’s future. All medical procedures are risky. Birth is even risky. Make sure you have confidence in your obstetrician or pediatrician. Talk to other parents as well.

Bill Lutz, of Aberdeen, said: Are you kidding me? They’re moms they’re not men. How the heck should they have any right? We don't get to tell them not to have an abortion or whether pads or tampons are better for them. Maybe they should just stay out of our business.
