No Injuries in Frito-Lay Blaze

The Aberdeen Fire Department extinguished a fire in a cooking unit and remained on scene for about an hour to clear smoke from the building.

The Aberdeen Fire Department responded Wednesday to a fire at the Frito-Lay, Inc., factory on Hickory Drive.

No firefighters or civilians were injured, authorities said.

A caller advised the Fire Department that a cooking unit was on fire inside the building, Fire Chief Steven C. Hinch said. Firefighters were on the scene just minutes after the call came in at 3:09 p.m., authorities said.

“The first arriving unit found smoke coming from the roof of the building,” Hinch said. “Crews entered the building with hand-lines and found a grease fire contained to the fryer unit.”

Crews extinguished the fire and then checked for any extension and found none, he said. The fire, fought by 10 units, was under control within 15-20 minutes, Hinch said. Fire units remained on the scene until 4:37 p.m. removing smoke from the building, authorities said.
