Staten Island beats Aberdeen 6-2 in series finale

Sorry for the delay everybody, I’ve been gone all day so I haven’t had a chance to post last night’s recap, so here is a quick recap of last night’s 2-6 loss to the Staten Island Yankees. The Aberdeen IronBirds leave Ripken Stadium with a 5-8 record, while the Yankees improve to 6-6. The IronBirds finished the home stand 3-2, while posting a 5-3 record in the last eight games, leaving them in 3rd place in the McNamara Division and just 1.5 Games behind Staten Island while trailing the 1st place Hudson Valley Renegades (10-4) by 4.5 Games. IronBirds LF Sam Kimmel went 2-4 with 1 R and 1 SB while extending his hitting streak to eight games, 3B Hector Veloz hit his 2nd HR of the season in the 4th Inning, and LF Mike Yastrzemski recorded his 1st professional hit in the 6th Inning, but Yankees starter Rookie Davis ( 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K’s) and relievers Andrew Benak (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K’s), Dillon McNamara and Charles Haslup held Aberdeen in check en route to the 6-2 win.

Yankees 2B Hector Crespo (2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) led off the scoring by giving Staten Island the 1-0 lead on an RBI single to score LF Daniel Lopez (2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) in the top of the 3rd before Aberdeen would tie the game right back up at 1-1 with an RBI single from 1B Trey Mancini to score DH Sam Kimmel in the bottom of the 3rd. In the 4th Inning, Hector Veloz crushed his 2nd HR of the year to left field off of RHP Andrew Benak to give the IronBirds the 2-1 lead, but the Yankees quickly took the 1-run lead on a 2-RBI single from DH Michael O’Neill (2-4, 3 RBI) off of IronBirds starter Austin Urban (4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R (2 earned), 6 BB, 1 K) in the top of the 5th Inning. IronBirds reliever David Richardson was outstanding in 2.1 shutout Innings out of the bullpen last night, and just allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two, and did a great job of holding the game in striking distance for Aberdeen. Staten Island would then extend their lead to 5-2 with two more runs coming from a RBI Double from SS Jose Rosario and an RBI single from O’Neill in the 8th Inning before tacking on another insurance run on reliever Michael Joseph off of an RBI single from Lopez to make it a 6-2 lead before RHP Charles Haslup would clinch the Yankees W with a 1-2-3 Inning in the 9th, and the Yankees 2-1 win of the 3-game set.
