Pedaling with purpose
“We are riding to honor my mom “Mamoo” Mary Ann Carmody, and millions of other people all over the world who have Alzheimer's or other dementias, or are caregivers for someone with these diseases,” says Carmody. “Mamoo will be at the finish line to welcome us!” Carmody also rides in memory of her father, John Carmody, who passed in July 2021, and was his wife’s caregiver. In Maryland there are more than 242,000 caregivers providing more than 371,000,000 hours of unpaid care, valued at $6,810,000,000. “My dad got into biking at age 65 when he and I did an AIDS ride from North Carolina to DC, and he kept riding for as long as his body would let him, including riding 40 miles roundtrip twice weekly for years to visit his dear friend who had Alzheimer’s,” says Carmody. “I know if he were here, he'd be strapping on his helmet and riding as many miles as he could!” Carmody also rides in memory of her maternal grandmother who died from Alzheimer’s."

A rigorous route
The route varies from a minimum of 20 miles to 100 miles, depending on the cyclist’s ability and stamina. Carmody “I'm going to try my best to do the 100 miles, but might end up doing 70 miles.” The 45-, 70- and 100-mile routes will head north towards famed communities along the Potomac such as Brunswick and Harpers Ferry. The routes will head west/southwest and pass through Lovettsville, Hillsboro, and Purcellville.

Team Carmody has set a goal of raising $10,000. To support her effort, donate at http://act.alz.org/goto/Coach_MamooRidetoRemember.
