Two tornadoes touched down in the Lower Eastern Shore as Isaias made its way to Maryland earlier Tuesday morning. The first touched down in Wicomico County just after 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The tornado left debris along Mardela’s Main Street.

A second tornado touched down just north of Girdletree in Worcester County at 7:20 a.m., which moved north toward Snow Hill.

In Salisbury in Wicomico County, the city’s fire department is reporting multiple trees and power lines down, including at least two trees that struck homes.

By late morning, the National Hurricane Center said the center of Isaias was moving rapidly across Eastern Maryland, approximately 20 miles south of Fredericktown.

Isaias, a storm on a path to sweep up the length of the East Coast, was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane late Monday night shortly before it made landfall in the Carolinas, the National Weather Service said. It was downgraded back to a tropical storm shortly after 4 a.m.

With 3 to 6 inches of rain expected in Maryland, particularly around the Interstate 95 corridor, officials advise drivers to stay off the roads if possible.

Flash flooding is likely, according to the National Weather Service, which has posted flash flood warnings around central Maryland and advised evacuations and rescues may be necessary. The Baltimore-Washington region is under a tropical storm warning as well.

"If you can delay your travel under later today, please do so," Maryland State Police said in a statement after 8 a.m. Tuesday. "Proceed with caution and stay safe."

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency said most of the state is likely to feel the effects of Isaias, from downpours to tropical storm-force winds.

The storm is expected to lash southern Maryland with gusts of up to 70 mph and pour up to 6 inches of rain in the Baltimore-Washington area.
