Tilghman Island, Maryland

Just under two hours from Washington, D.C., you'll find a cozy and friendly watermen town name Tilghman Island. Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Tilghman Island offers visitors a relaxing stay with plenty to fill in your day. From seafood, sailing, to sunsets, you don't want to pass on this watermen's village. The Wylder Hotel sits on 9-acres of lush grounds and waterfront property. It's a favorite of locals for dinner and drinks at Tickler's Crab Shack and Restaurant. Sharon Smith-Tohu, visiting from Washington, D.C. had her first experience eating crabs, "they remind me of crayfish back home in New Zealand." Local Captain Alan Faulkner was having drinks at the Restaurant was happy to give Sharon a lesson on cracking crabs, "here's what you do. you pull this back and get rid of the claws and open this right up." It took no time for Sharon to get the hang of eating Maryland's favorite summer seafood. Captain Faulkner says he owned a boat before a bicycle. On hot summer days, you can find him helping Captain Shannon Pickens owner of the Working Girl on the water. Tilghman Island is still a working watermen community. Captain Wade Murphy III of Elle's Angels says, "I'm usually on the water by 4:30 am crabbing or taking charter's out on the Chesapeake Bay." Murphy's father is the legendary Captain Wade H. Murphy of the Skipjack Rebecca T. Ruark, you'll find him on the Skipjack giving tours. Wade III is a third-generation waterman who has worked the waters around Tilghman Island his entire life. His face looks more like a marine than waterman, but his carefree attitude and local knowledge put you at ease. The waters known for oysters are a local favorite so don’t leave without trying them.
Over at the Tilghman Island Country Store, you'll find owner Patricia Mcglannkn, watering her garden behind the store. Patricia sells beautiful goodies, sandwiches, and beverages in her store. She also says, "to say hello to Mrs. June, who came with the store. She's been here for 67 years and a local celebrity." Patricia also hosts Friday's@five, a free wine tasting that brings locals, visitors, and watermen together. The island has some of the best sunsets on the Eastern Shore. Don't forget to check out Phillips Wharf Environmental Center, Tilghman Island Watermen's Museum, and the local youth community garden.
