Bicyclist Dies When GMC Driver Crosses Center Line: Police

Two other bicyclists were injured in the incident, one critically. The crash happened Sunday afternoon on East College Parkway, Annapolis.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A bicyclist was killed and two others injured when the driver of an SUV crossed over the center line and struck a group of seven bicyclists Sunday afternoon. The bicyclists were riding westbound on East College Parkway March 8 at approximately 12:36 p.m. near Bay Head Road when a GMC driven by Carl Leslie Behler, 67, of Annapolis entered their lane and hit them. One bicyclist, Arthur Herbert Carter Jr., 59, of Hanover, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted on Carter.

Two other cyclists were transported to an area hospital. Jeffrey Michael Adler, 58, of Chestnut Hill Cove suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Kathleen Anne Hayes, 21, of Columbia, sustained minor injuries and also was taken to the hospital.

The primary cause of the crash appears to be the driver of the GMC failing to remain in a single lane. Speed or alcohol does not appear to have contributed to this crash, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The traffic safety section is handling the crash investigation.
