Activities Planned In Anne Arundel For National Bike To Work Day

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Motorists should be extra vigilant Friday when out and about because May 17 is National Bike to Work Day. The City of Annapolis is kicking off the day with a special gathering at Market House at 8 a.m. Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley and County Executive Steuart Pittman will be on hand at City Dock for a rally with cyclists to celebrate the eco-friendly form of transportation.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, the number of people who use bicycles as their main mode of transportation since 2000 has increased by 62 percent. Bike to Work Day is a national campaign that recognizes and encourages bicycling as a healthy commuting option while boosting public awareness of its environmental benefits. Bike to Work Day also raises awareness of bike safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Tanya Asman, bicycle pedestrian planner with Anne Arundel County’s office of transportation, said the county encourages riders to ride together since there is “safety in numbers.” There also will be numerous stops around town and in neighboring communities on National Bike to Work Day. Asman said there will be volunteers at the pit stops handing out “free bike swag and a T-shirt.”

“Each stop will have refreshments too, differing between each one, depending on the stop. At two of our locations, Market House in downtown Annapolis and National Business Park, Cafe Joe's, there will be raffles for bike related merchandise and other fun events such as BaySox games,” Asman said.
