Annapolis Civil Air Patrol Cadet Earns Milestone Award

Broadneck HS student completes Civil Air Patrol program win and earns Eaker award

Cadet Emmy Hoyt, a junior at Broadneck HS, has earned the Civil Air Patrol Eaker award. The award was presented by Middle East region commander Colonel John Knowles at a ceremony at Lee Airport.

Cadet Hoyt became a member of the Civil Air Patrol in 2011. She holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and serves as Vice Commander of cadets at the Annapolis squadron. “I hope to major in aerospace engineering and photography in college. My ultimate career goal is to become a space photographer,” said Hoyt.

The General Ira C. Eaker award denotes successful completion of the Civil Air Patrol cadet program. The award was begun in 1995 and honors the late Air Force general who was one of the chief architects and visionaries of the U..S Air Force. Approximately 200 cadets per year receive this award nationwide.

The Annapolis Composite Squadron meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at Lee Airport in Edgewater, Maryland. Adults and prospective cadets ages 12-18 are invited to learn of volunteer opportunities. Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 60,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP in its auxiliary role, performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually. Its unpaid professionals also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 25,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. Performing missions for America for over 70 years, CAP also received the Congressional Medal in 2015 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. Nearly 1,600 CAP members serve in Maryland. Last year Maryland Wing members flew 13 search and rescue missions. The wing was credited with five finds and one life saved. Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland. Members flew 2,106 hours in all mission categories. Volunteers contributed services estimated at 4.6 million dollars.
