Annapolis Man Dies After Shooting; Second Victim Out Of Hospital

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis man has died from gunshot wounds, while his companion has been released from the hospital, police said Friday. The couple was shot Wednesday night, and a suspect linked to the case barricaded himself in an Edgewater house for several hours before surrendering Thursday morning, police say. Michael Covert, 36, of Annapolis died Thursday from his injuries, say Annapolis Police, while Lashira Addison, 41, of Annapolis, was wounded, but is no longer in the hospital.

Barnabas Offer Jr., 25, of Annapolis, surrendered after the standoff and was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts each of first- and second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, and illegal possession of a handgun, authorities said. He was the only person in the home during the incident.

Offer is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bond. Detectives are working with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney to file additional charges against Offer in Covert's death, according to a news release.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Michael Covert following this tragedy," Mayor Michael Pantelides said in a statement. "I also pray for strength and healing for Ms. Addison following this devastating situation in our community. I will continue to work with the executive director of HACA and continue to coordinate our efforts, putting a stop to these senseless deaths that are causing havoc in our community. Our police department has once again demonstrated its commitment to finding and arresting those who are a danger to our residents, despite where they try to hide. I commend the department for its dedication to our community and for their outstanding investigative work."

The shootings were reported shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Madison Street. Officers were told a person of interest linked to the shooting — later identified as Offer — was at an address in the 700 block of Central Avenue in Edgewater. When officers arrived about 11 p.m., Offer barricaded himself inside the home, officers set up a perimeter and negotiators responded. The police response closed Central Avenue to all traffic until about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police also arrested two suspects in the 1100 block of Madison Street during the shooting investigation for reportedly being inside an apartment without permission from the resident. Craig Belt, 30, of Annapolis and Delvonta Wright, 25, of Severn, were charged with handgun possession and fourth-degree burglary after they were found in an apartment.
Officers found a handgun in the apartment and are working to determine if it was the firearm used in the shooting.

Anne Arundel County Police closed off Rt. 214, also known as Central Avenue, near Oak Lane in the Camp Letts area, to all traffic while the barricaded suspect talked with a police negotiator.
