ANNAPOLIS, MD — Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson was removed from his position by Mayor Jared Littmann on Monday due to "differing" management styles.

A Monday release from Littmann's office indicates Capt. Amy Miguez, a veteran of the force for 25 years, has been tapped to serve as acting police chief.

Miguez praised Jackson's contributions to the force, saying he "made it possible for leaders like me to step forward."

Prior to the organizational restructuring, Miguez served as the captain of administrative services. She started with the department in 2000 as a dispatcher for the agency.

“I thank Chief Jackson for his service to our residents,” Littmann said in a statement. “I admire and respect his work on diversifying the force and command staff and his work on reentry and cold case investigations. These efforts are important to our community, and I want to see these initiatives continue.

"Leadership transitions are never easy, but my goal is to maintain strong governance across all departments as we continue serving Annapolis," he added.

Littman said he has tasked acting City Manager Victoria Buckland and acting Human Resources Manager Lasan Crispin with prioritizing hiring a new city manager before starting a search for the capital's next confirmed police chief.

There was no further explanation from Littmann about what prompted the change.

Jackson served as Annapolis' police chief since August 2019. He has not yet issued any comment on the development.

The former chief's policing career started with the Baltimore Police Department in 1983, according to the Annapolis department's directory. In addition to his police work, Jackson served as a director and assistant professor at the Baltimore City Community College's criminal justice department.
