Anne Arundel Co. Community Comes Together To Save Steer From Slaughter

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — With more than $25,000 in donations, an Annapolis man's efforts to save a beloved steer from slaughter proved a success over the weekend.

Miles Kimbrough put out a community call last week to save Carl, a 1,400-pound Charolais steer that was going up for auction at the Anne Arundel County Fair on Saturday. If Carl wasn't bought, he would be sold for beef.

Over the course of a few days, Kimbrough launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of collecting enough funds to buy Carl and have him transferred to a local farm where he could live out the remainder of his life.

Kimbrough described the nearly 3-year-old steer as a sassy but sweet gentle giant that was previously housed at the Kinder Farm Park in Millersville.

With more than 500 donations in the span of 72 hours, Kimbrough's initiative proved a success. He was able to buy Carl for the final price of $25,410.

"Completely and utterly unreal. Our hearts are beyond full," the Annapolis man said in a Sunday update. "We set out to do one thing, and we did it: Carl gets to live a long, happy, healthy life surrounded by love."

While Carl won't be living with Kimbrough, the steer will be headed to his new home at the Wild Kid Acres petting zoo in Edgewater.
