Anne Arundel County Schools Calendar: 11 Must-Know Dates for Winter 2016-17

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Students are back in school for just a few more weeks until the extended winter holidays. And parents better pull out the calendar now and start making plans.

Anne Arundel County School District students get seven weekdays away from classrooms, book bags and homework.

According to the school district calendar for 2016-17, the winter holiday begins with early dismissal on Dec. 22 and runs through Monday, Jan. 2. Students get two more days off: Jan. 16 is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and Jan. 23 is designated as a teacher workday.

Here's the complete winter schedule for Anne Arundel County Public Schools:

• Dec. 22: Two-hour early dismissal for all students, teacher workday. Schools closed for p.m. Pre-kindergarten and E.C.I. students
• Dec. 23-Jan. 1: Christmas/Winter Break. All schools and central offices closed December 23 through January 2 for students, teachers, and school-based Unit IV employees.

And we'll throw in four important dates to kick off 2017:

• Jan. 2: All Schools and Central Offices closed
• Jan. 16: Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration, all schools and offices closed
• Jan. 19-20: End of second marking period, two-hour early dismissal for all students, teacher workdays. Schools closed for p.m. Pre-kindergarten and E.C.I. students
• Jan. 23: Schools closed for students. Workday for teachers

The extended forecast for the winter holidays includes little chance of a white Christmas with highs in the mid-to upper 40s that week, followed by cooler temps and a chance of ice, rain and snow flurries right before New Year's Eve.

The Anne Arundel County Public Library System will hold several special events during the time away from class, including Brooklyn Park Library's Pokémon (Unofficial) Card Game Tournament, the Severn Library's Pop and Popcorn for Teens and the Crofton Library's Tween Book Club: The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart.
