Presidents day was originally established in the 1880s to honor President George Washington. Eventually, the day came to recognize all presidents. It was moved to a Monday so it could be part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that took effect in 1971. At that time, the name also was officially changed to Presidents Day.
