Authorities Issue Update On Annapolis Explosion

A 77-year-old man was identified in the Annapolis explosion that was reported Tuesday afternoon.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The person seriously injured in an Annapolis explosion was identified Wednesday as a 77-year-old man.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the explosion occurred Tuesday as the man "was reportedly mixing chemicals inside a detached shed."

The mixed chemicals were not specified by the department.

Officials were initially alerted to the scene around 2 p.m. at a home on the 3000 block of Friends Road for a report of a structure fire.

Authorities said neighbors were the first to respond to the explosion after hearing a loud boom and seeing smoke emitting from the man's garage. They were able to provide "basic medical care until first responders arrived" on the scene.

Suffering from severe injuries, the man was taken to a Baltimore trauma center via a Maryland State Police helicopter. He remains in serious medical condition, according to the fire department.

No other injuries were reported at the home, although investigators did indicate the detached shed sustained significant structural damage.

The incident remains under investigation.
