ANNAPOLIS, MD — Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bedell saw his contract on Wednesday unanimously approved for a four-year extension.

The contract renewal came down during a vote by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.

"Dr. Bedell will be the first to say there is still more work ahead, but this contract reflects this Board’s strong confidence in his leadership and in the direction of Anne Arundel County Public Schools under his leadership,” Board President Gloria Dent said.

"We have seen measurable progress in student outcomes, stronger engagement with staff and families, and meaningful partnerships across our community that continue to support student success. This Board values the stability, accountability and vision Dr. Bedell brings to this school system, and we want him to continue leading for the benefit of our current and future students, staff, and families. Renewing his contract was both intentional and unquestionable."

Bedell first signed on to serve as the school district's superintendent in June 2022, after heading Missouri's Kansas City Public Schools for six years.

The superintendent's time in the region has been rounded out by two redistricting phases, a decline in chronic student absenteeism, a bus driver shortage, a curriculum overhaul, a spike in graduation rates, and the return of class rank, among other initiatives.

Bedell's new contract, which includes a $372,171.60 salary for the first year, will take effect July 1.
