Chesapeake Bay Helped By Donated Oyster Shells From Across U.S.

The Chesapeake Bay's health had declined for years, but restaurants from across the U.S. are pitching in to help by donating oyster shells.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Chesapeake Bay is getting help from friends across the country. The Bay has struggled to improve water quality in recent years, but thanks to the Shell Recycling Alliance, efforts are being made to rehabilitate the popular body of water in a unique manner.

Some reports say it’s improved in recent years, until last summer when the Bay was filled with floodwaters from PA and NJ that polluted it again. In the nine years since it was founded, the Shell Recycling Alliance has reclaimed hundreds of thousands of bushels of oyster shells, which has supported the replanting of 725 million oysters in the Bay.

Six Pittsburgh restaurants recently joined the mission as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Some of the participating restaurants in Annapolis include Middleton Tavern, McGarvey’s Saloon & Oyster Bar, State House and Galway Bay Irish Restaurant and Pub.
