Coronavirus Scam Circulating In Anne Arundel County

People are posing as Anne Arundel Medical Center representatives, claiming to have a cure for the new coronavirus and asking for money.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A scam directly linked to the new coronavirus pandemic has popped up in Anne Arundel County. People are calling area residents, claiming to be representatives of Anne Arundel Medical Center, the hospital said. The callers ask for credit card information and say they have a cure for the virus.

"Please know if you receive a call like this, it is a scam and you should report it to the police," the hospital said on its Facebook page. "We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our community safe."

Sgt. Jacklyn Davis, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, confirmed to Patch that the scam is circulating around the county. She warned all residents to "verify who you are dealing with in any situation."

On Tuesday, the Bowie Police Department reported two incidents, one in which a man wearing a blue surgical mask knocked on the door of a home claiming to be inspecting for the new coronavirus. In the second incident, the man entered the home through an unlocked door and was confronted by the resident. He began talking to the resident,but fled when he heard a dog barking. Bowie police reminded residents not to open their homes to anyone "claiming to be checking for the COVID-19 virus or offering to clean their home."
