Age: 56
Hometown: East Lansing Michigan
Political Affiliation: At this time, I'm registered Democrat.
Do you have any previous political experience? If so, please state and explain how that experience will influence your time in office if elected.
I interned for Senator Winegrad in 1988. My father was a representative in Detroit in an all-Black district when Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered. My brother's godfather, Coleman Young, was mayor of Detroit for 17 years. I followed housing policy closely from an early age.
What do you believe is the single-most important issue facing voters in the district you’re looking to represent? How do you intend to address those issues?
Housing is the most important thing. It always is. Officer safety and well trained or thoughtful conduct. Identifying recurring issues of any nature. Senior fraud! Bait and switch contracts! Ground water and sediment control.
How do you differ from other candidates running against you?
I'm blue collar, yet well educated. I know the roads and waterways. My hands and feet are familiar with District 6, unlike any of the other candidates.
My knowledge of housing history is extensive. My knowledge of the waterways goes back to childhood. I know road construction vehicle maintenance.
I don't earn a lot of money. I don't spend other people's money easily. I like to see money spent have good returns.
How would your work experience benefit the goals/objectives you’ve outlined in your campaign and/or the office you’re seeking?
I believe single-family zoning should have exemptions for more than one dwelling. Finishing garages or outbuildings and small house construction. I'm a carpenter. Layout of properties such that neighboring properties are not impacted is the first criteria. New housing stock doesn't have to come from corporate rentals, but from homeowners. Seniors can stay home instead of going to corporate senior housing.
What is your opinion of the work being done by the current office holder, and how will you improve on it?
No one is thinking out side of the box! Everyone fills the niche and says what people want to hear.
How do you believe Anne Arundel County should address data centers?
They have to be away from people and they have to supply their own power.
Do you believe there should be a data center moratorium or a temporary pause? Explain.
It's either America makes them, or we use Chinese data centers. They are a necessary evil that have actual purpose, and we need them to some degree.
Do you believe there should be data center regulations put in place? Explain.
Away from people and making their own power.
What steps would you take to offset data center impacts to residents’ standard of living, such as rising energy prices?
7500 State grants for renewable energy are perfect. Everyone should go to the Maryland page for renewable grants right now. I'm researching products we can buy without a contractor. If anyone is interested, call me (443) 333-6291. I would like to get 1,000 people signed up. Maryland is trying to add energy production after it closed so many coal plants.
How would you distinguish between a good vs. bad data center? Or do you believe no data centers should be in the county/district?
A bad center raises energy costs and is too close to people.
Gov. Wes Moore signed bills banning agreements between local police and federal immigration officials in February. What is your opinion of the legislation?
It means nothing. He avoided having an opinion. It just says the police don't have to not work with the feds. It's politics. It's political mumbo jumbo.
What steps would you take to support or readjust that initiative?
I personally think any murderer or rapists from incidents in another country should be released to the feds.
What is your stance on the establishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers in the county and/or your district?
People have to have a healthy, safe environment even if they are criminals. Mass incarceration is just a rough thought in the first place.
What actionable plans would you undertake to address illegal immigration?
This goes back to the 1980s. We supported the wrong leaders in South America. I do believe a solid border is important. We either need to clean our own houses or get more mechanical ways to farm and build houses. And this is happening. Plus, with less illegal labor, maybe an American will do the job with a competitive salary.
Education: What is the biggest issue facing Anne Arundel County Public Schools? How would you address it?
I don't believe in grades. I think competency tests are better. A student could take the test over and over until they learn. It's called root learning. I think the students should be off campus for internships and work study. Businesses should be connected to schools.
A student brings a gun/weapon to school, which is not fitted with any metal detectors. What security measures would you advocate for to ensure student and staff safety?
I was a substitute for three years in AAC public schools. I think more often than not, I could see who was a troubled student. We need to reach out to troubled individuals. Schools could have off-duty officers. With student interns!
Do you believe schools need stricter security measures? Metal detectors?
If a metal detector prevents guns from entering, it makes sense to me.
Anne Arundel County is experiencing a housing shortage. What steps would you take to address the crisis?
Special exemption for multiple dwellings on single-family property zoning.
What will you do to encourage affordable/public housing?
We need to clean up the housing we have. Annapolis lost a resident to mold. Bi was in the building before he died and complained of the mold. The death of Damon R. Fisher was avoidable.
I'm a carpenter. He wouldn't have died if I had a power at all. The money to renovate is less than the lawsuits. The elected officials live on their nice houses. They don't spend time in the other neighborhoods.
My peers in the construction industry come from all social backgrounds. I'm familiar with the actual buildings and people in these federal houses, supposedly cared for by the city of Annapolis. They don't. They suck at it!
How will you address crime in the county/your district?
First opportunity crime is easy. Lock your cars. Put an outside light on during dark nights. Criminals like noisy dark nights. Education in jails. Better school system that seeks out and helps troubled youth. Identifying hotspots and seeking ways to reduce the recurring problems.
